The Science Behind the Number
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from your height and weight. It provides a quick screening tool to categorize weight status and identify potential health risks associated with being underweight or overweight. While BMI doesn't directly measure body fat, it correlates strongly with more direct measures for most adults.
How is BMI Calculated?
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²). For imperial units, the formula is: (weight in lbs / height in inches²) × 703. Our calculator handles both systems automatically.
Limitations of BMI
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes with high muscle mass may register as overweight despite being healthy. It also doesn't account for fat distribution, age, or sex differences. Use BMI as a starting point, not a complete health assessment.
When to Talk to a Provider
If your BMI falls outside the healthy range, or if you have concerns about your weight, energy levels, or metabolic health, a licensed provider can help. They'll consider your full health profile — not just a number — to recommend appropriate next steps.
